Kylie's Story
Some people carry sunshine with them wherever they go. Kylie Patterson is one of those people.
Kylie grew up in Mississippi with the kind of childhood that shapes a person in all the right ways. She rode horses competitively, sang in choir, and played in the school band. She was always moving, always creating, always reaching for the next adventure.
After graduating from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Kylie did what her heart had always told her to do: she packed a bag and set out to see the world. A gap year turned into a grand European adventure, the kind you tell stories about for the rest of your life. It was at a hostel in Montenegro where she met Marcus, and everything changed. The world got a little bigger and a lot brighter.
Together, they moved to Melbourne, where Kylie completed her Masters in Environmental Science. She was building exactly the life she had dreamed of: meaningful work, a partner she adored, and a rescue dog named Monty who had claimed his spot on the couch and in their hearts.
In December 2022, at just twenty-five years old, Kylie received a diagnosis that no one ever expects: Stage IV cancer. In an instant, the life she was building in Australia was put on pause. Her family brought her home to the United States and got her into MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, one of the best places in the world for exactly this fight.
Marcus didn't hesitate. He and Monty made the move to Houston to be at Kylie's side, because that's where they belong. Her oncologist, Dr. Shen, has encouraged her to keep traveling and experiencing as much of life as possible between treatments. And that's exactly what Kylie does. She is not waiting for her life to begin again. She is living it, fully and beautifully, right now.
Kylie has many more chapters ahead. She has places to go, dogs to pet, sunsets to chase, and people to love. She faces every day with the same quiet courage and bright spirit that she's carried her whole life. This is not the end of her story. It's just one part of it.
